I had the pleasure of collaborating with the brilliant Maria Franzoni recently, and together, we decided to create a series of concise Zoom interviews discussing key future trends.

In our fourteenth friendly chat, we dive into a fresh perspective on an innovation that didn’t become widespread until less than 200 years ago – the FLUSH TOILET!

In today’s rapidly evolving tech world, it might sound a tad silly to highlight toilets. Yet, there’s an emerging industry you might have overlooked – ‘Smart Toilets’. These futuristic fixtures offer incredible potential by analysing our waste, potentially catching signs of health deterioration early on, or offering insights to adjust our diets for optimal well-being. However, as with most advancements, there’s a flip side. Did you know we each have a unique ‘analprint’? As these toilets store our data, it raises concerning questions about privacy. Imagine if a tech giant like Google were to acquire your smart toilet provider? The wealth of intimate information they’d possess could shape their inferences about you in unsettling ways. Moreover, consider the possibility of employers demanding access to such data for health insurance reasons. From revealing early stages of pregnancy to signs of recreational drug use, your personal information could be at risk. So, as we marvel at these advancements, it’s crucial we also pause to ponder the implications.

In this brief video, we’re only using toilets as an example of novel avenues through which we might be generating invaluable data!

This marks the culmination of our current interview series. Stay tuned for fresh content up ahead!

Thanks for watching!
